Jumbo Sales Turnover is Big Birthday Present for Genesis Timber Engineering

The Gloucester based timber engineering company has just broken its record turnover for one month by £30,000, achieving a 50% higher than expected target. GTE™ is expecting to reach a turnover figure of £2,000,000 over the next twelve months.
"This couldn’t have been a better fifth birthday present for the company," commented Simon Baldwin, GTE™ sales director, "Since we moved into our new Bristol Road premises two years ago, we’ve grown our business satisfyingly rapidly, with regional developers, self builders plus timber frame companies forming our core customer base. I think the main reason for this growth is our reputation for being a trustworthy operation. People deal with people, not companies. We aim to treat both customers and our own staff the way we wish to be treated ourselves. This means delivering what we say we will when we say we will. In addition our five day fastrack™ truss delivery service has proved to be a big hit with contractors."

More good news for the company is adding to the celebrations: GTE™ has been awarded the UK Timber Frame Association’s Q Mark, following an inspection by BM TRADA on behalf of the TFA into the company’s manufacturing processes, tolerances & administration systems. Phil Cloke, BM TRADA’s Auditor commented: "GTE™ run a system that is comprehensive and covers all aspects of the business process. Roof Truss & Timber Frame manufacturing areas are clearly under strict control resulting in conforming product being dispatched to customers."

Other company news includes an inspection by an assessor on behalf of the Investors in People standard, which has confirmed that GTE™ is still meeting the requirements of the scheme’s exacting standards. Commenting on the company’s success in this area, Chris Holt of Investors in People said:

"There is a belief in the vision and values of the organisation, and these provide focus and direction. The strategy to achieve the organisation’s aims relies on people at all levels understanding the contribution they make to the success of the business. There is a strong culture of consultation and involvement through regular team meetings and monthly one to ones. Staff can openly and honestly express their opinions without fear of retribution."

Testimony to GTE™'s ongoing investment in its staff is the rigorous forklift trucks handling training programme the company’s staff were recently required to undertake. GTE™ is proud to report that all employees passed this programme with flying colours.

With good news coming from so many areas of the business it seems that GTE™ has got the first half of 2008 off to a great start.

End of an Era!!

It was with great sadness this photo was taken as it marked the end of such an important & remarkable buildings life.
Through the years it has been used as the main stores for the RAF where the trains came in to the building and were then unloaded with goods then distributed not only locally with in the base itself but nationally aswell. It stored materials used for Royal visits and had a 'Silver polishing shop'that at one time was used to prepare the cutlery used by the Queen.

This was where it all started for GTE™ and was an excellent facility to manufacture roof trusses and timber frame homes from as the floors were perfectly level - The Civil Service certainly don't settle for second best & neither do GTE™!!

Thankyou Unit 1 H.Q. Site, Quedgeley for giving GTE™ such a 'flying' start in business - Gone but not forgotten.

Phil commented "GTE™ run a system that is comprehensive and covers all aspects of the business process. Roof Truss & Timber Frame manufacturing areas are clearly under strict control resulting in conforming product being dispatched to customers - Very competent Manual/Procedure processes."

GTE™ are delighted with this current achievement and are commited to the continuous improvement of product quality and customer service.

Recognition of Maintaining The Investors In People Standard

It was good to see Chris Holt again after some three years to see if GTE™ still met the requirements of the Investors In People Standard - And Chris was delighted to inform us that recognition is maintained as from the 19th December 2007.

His report stated that core values are at the heart of the organisation and ALL employees understand the aims of the company as set out in our mission statement.
Chris said " There is a belief in the vision and values of the organisation that these provide focus and direction. The strategy to achieve the organisation's aims relies on people at all levels understanding the contribution they make to the success of the business. There is a strong culture of consultation and involvement; this takes place through regular team meetings and monthly one to ones - People can openly and honestly express their opinions without fear of retribution".

The Directors of GTE™ were delighted with Chris's findings and will continue to improve the company for both customers & employees.

GTE™ manufacture their first engineered metalweb joist floor.

With the current pressures on the environment ever increasing building designers and their business partners are always on the look out for ways in which to reduce carbon footprints. The openweb system gives virtual uninterrupted access for the passage of services and in particular underfloor heating and ventilation systems. These systems are efficient and can offer reductions in long term running costs and impact on resources and the environment.

GTE™ have a drink or two with a 'Lions Legend'

GTE™ attended in force a sports man's dinner in aid of the Old Richians RFC junior section and came across 'Willie John McBride'. As the photo indicates we had a fantastic time listening to stories from when 'WJB' was a victorious British Lions captain against the Spingboks. He made his international debut against England at Twickenham on Saturday the 10th February 1962 aged 21. His international career spanned from 1962 until 1975, He played in a record 17 tests for the Lions. He was capped 63 times, 12 as Captain for Ireland. He won the last 52 of his caps in succession. In the 1960's when the robust physical play of the All blacks and Springboks dominated, he was one of the few forwards from the home nations who was their match.

Willie-John's outstanding leadership qualities led to his appointment as Captain of the 1974 Lions tour to South Africa. The test series was won 3-0, with one match drawn. It was the most controversial & physical test match series ever played. The management of the Lions concluded that the Springboks dominated their opponents with physical aggression. At that time there were only substitutions if a Doctor agreed that a player was physically unable to continue, There were NO video cameras or officials to keep punching, kicking & head butting under control. The Lions decided "to get their retaliation in first" and the notorius "99" call was conceived - This signalled the Lions player to attack their nearest opponent.
In 1975 as 'WJBs' playing career was coming to a close he played his last game for Ireland at Lansdowne Road. The game was against France and towards the end of the match he scored his first and only try in an international match!! It was a fitting crowning moment of a distinguished playing career. His last international game was against Wales on Saturday March 15, 1975.

After retiring from the great game he coached the Irish team & was manager of the 1983 Lions tour to New Zealand. He now lives in Ballyclare and in 2004 was named by Rugby World magazine as 'Heineken Rugby Personality of the Century'.

Achievement of the Investors In People Standard

Genesis Timber Engineering (GTE™) achieved the Investors In People (IIP) standard as an early impressive 2nd birthday present. Since its start up in Spring 2003 ‘GTE™’ has grown its turnover from zero to £ 750,000 – another achievement that has exceeded the target set by the company’s management team by 50%.

As an ambitious and forward thinking company ‘GTE’ recognised the importance of all its staff understanding how their individual performance & commitment impacted on company results. The IIP programme has ensured there is a clear company aim that has been formulated with input from every member of staff. James Smith, production director, has been delighted with the attitude and aptitude with which staff have embraced the standard and commented “We have seen significant increases in efficiency and production results since the introduction of the Investors In People standard. For a 2003 start up business to achieve this award in such a short space of time is something we are all immensely proud of.”

Technical director, Paul Dempster emphasised “ The quality of ones staff directly relates to the quality of both our products & services. By investing in our staff, to ensure that they are the best that they can be, we are actually investing in the future of our company. We intend to always be the best.”

GTE’s philosophy of ‘treating customers & staff the way in which they wish to be treated themselves’, is a priority – in fact it’s the companies motto!!

Sales director Simon Baldwin commented “ Our own previous experiences as employees of not feeling valued were instrumental in our decision to commit to ‘investing in our people.”

GTE™ appointed Master Dealer for Trus Joists Silent Floor System

As a former R.A.F. camp, Genesis Timber Engineering’s headquarters in Gloucestershire must have witnessed some pretty speedy take-offs. None more so than the rapid ascent of this brand new company. Since it’s start-up in Spring 2003 Genesis has grown its turnover from zero to £ 750,000 – an achievement that has exceeded by 50% the target set by the company’s management team. Even more good news for the company is its recent appointment as a Trus Joist Master Dealer.

To be appointed a Trus Joist Master Dealer so early in its development is testimony to the faith that Trus Joist places in the new company’s board. Indeed, the board has a long and successful history with the Trus Joist through a former Master Dealer, which familiarity with Trus Joist’s products and its team, enabling the new company to really ‘hit the ground running’.

James Sweet, Trus Joist’s UK sales manager comments: “The market for engineered wood products in the UK is growing rapidly, and Genesis Timber Engineering is a prime example of a company that is really capitalising on the opportunities that this growth is bringing. Our TJI® joists and other engineered timber products are a key element in this start-up organisation.”

Having the right products is certainly important (Genesis is offering roof trusses, bespoke timber frame buildings and TJI® joists), but sales director, Simon Baldwin, knows the company’s growth has been largely due to its service-driven approach. He comments: “People deal with people, not companies. We aim to treat both customers and our own staff the way we wish to be treated ourselves. This means delivering what we say we will when we say we will. Our reputation for being a trustworthy operation is therefore growing.”

An important aspect of Genesis Timber Engineering’s operation is its specialist fleet of vehicles, which offers deliveries to site in a maximum of 5 working days from receipt of order. The majority of deliveries are made within a 100 mile radius of the company’s Gloucester HQ to regional independent builders’ merchants, national builders’ merchants, regional developers and self build projects.

At the company’s 16,500 sq.ft. production facility Genesis has appointed a number of staff specifically to handle the business generated through Trus Joist’s TJI® joists and Silent Floor® system. Already it has introduced a Silent Floor® System product manager who is a Trus Joist recognised ‘Top Gun’ operator of Trus Joist’s TJ-Xpert® software. This system automatically tracks loads throughout structures and develops sizing solutions, material lists, framing plans and installation details. A timber frame specialist has been introduced, as has a number of specialist roof truss production personnel.

Over the next twelve months, Genesis intends to invest in new machinery to handle increasing sales of TJI® joists. And in approximately two years’ time, the company’s aim is to move to a purpose-built, state-of-the-art production facility for Trussed Rafters, Bespoke Timber Frame Buildings and Silent Floor® joists.
